SummerBLAST 2021
Students ages 7 to 18, grouped with their peers in 2 or 3-week sessions, explore the transformative power of storytelling and collaboration.

It’s time to get off Zoom! People’s Light summer programs are back with sessions that embrace theatre essentials—voice, movement, imagination, and the open air. Students ages 7 to 18, grouped with their peers in 2 or 3-week sessions, learn from professional theatre artists as we explore the transformative power of storytelling and collaboration. So, unplug, get moving, and most importantly, have a blast this summer!

Don’t forget to sign up early. Space in each session is limited as part of our Health & Safety plan. Please scroll to the bottom of this page to read our full protocols before you register.

Ages 14-18: Teen Lab

Due to vaccination availability for this age group, sessions will be conducted both indoors and outdoors. Scroll to the bottom of this page for complete health & safety information.

Our Teen Lab runs Monday through Friday, 12pm-5pm. Participants age 13 may enroll with permission of the Director of Education. Extended day available at an additional cost.

2 Weeks: August 9-20

Over a two-week intensive, teen actors will explore two distinct methods of performance: script-based and improvisatory. Prepare a monologue using a variety of techniques to analyze, personalize, and interpret your chosen text. At the same time, embrace the spontaneous creativity that comes from trusting your impulses through ensemble and improv exercises. Many actors prefer one style of working over the other, but great acting lives at the intersection of both. If you’re most comfortable polishing rehearsed work, this lab will dare you to experiment on the fly. If your acting is playful but not always purposeful, this lab will challenge you to make increasingly powerful choices. Though seemingly at opposite ends of the acting spectrum, text-work and improv ultimately unite in truthful performances.

Ages 7-13: Unplugged & Outdoors

All sessions for ages 7-13 are entirely outdoors and run Monday through Friday, 9am-3pm. Extended day available from 8-9am and 3-5:30pm at an additional cost.

Folk Tale Friends: Ages 7-9

2 Weeks: July 26-August 6

Our youngest theatre-makers work as an ensemble to step into stories and bring worlds to life. We will use a variety of folk tales as our springboard to imagine fantastical settings and characters, using an actor’s tools of voice, body, and imagination. This session closes with a final sharing on Friday, August 6 at 4pm.

World Builders: Ages 10-13

3 Weeks: July 5-23

Deciding what story to tell is just as important as how you tell it. Through the creation of an original play, participants will develop not only as actors, but as artists who must consider what they want to say, why it matters, and how to bring their own personal experience to every role. This session closes with a final sharing on Friday, July 23 at 4pm.

Health & Safety Information

People’s Light puts health and safety first in making all programmatic choices, and actively follows local and national recommendations regarding COVID-19 precautions. Please read through our current health and safety plans before registering.

If your family has any specific questions or concerns, please contact us at or 610.647.1900 x137.

SummerBLAST 2021 sessions for ages 7-13 will be held outdoors; including arrival and pick-up, instructional time, and lunch. Students will work primarily in a large tented area (covered from sun and rain but open on the sides for maximum ventilation), as well as on People’s Light’s new outdoor stage. Outdoor programming will continue rain or shine, with indoor spaces available in case of dangerous conditions such as lightning or extreme heat. Regular cooling breaks will be observed in hot weather and/or rigorous physical activity.

All students are required to bring a mask to SummerBLAST, and staff will have extra masks on hand. Masks will be optional during most outdoor sessions. If students have to move indoors due to weather, masks and social distancing are required. Participant screening and temperature checks will be incorporated into daily arrivals.

Each session’s enrollment is limited, with only one age group in session at a time. Activities will be planned to incorporate social distancing, and any specific exercises that could bring students and/or teachers into closer proximity will be conducted with masks. Students will receive individual materials as needed. Guest capacity at the sharings on the final day of each session will be limited in order to observe social distancing between family parties.

Outdoor portable restroom facilities and hand washing stations will be used during this summer’s outdoor programming and frequent hand-washing/sanitizer breaks will be observed.

Teen Lab participants who are vaccinated have the option to participate in all activities unmasked; a copy of the COVID-19 vaccination record is required prior to unmasking in indoor spaces. Participants who do not provide a vaccination record must remain masked at all times. Even for vaccinated participants, masks will always be welcome at a student or family’s preference.

A complete safety policy with the most current requirements and recommendations will be shared with each participating household. Signature is required prior to participation in SummerBLAST.

Flexibility and Cancellations

We realize the changing conditions of the ongoing pandemic and the chance of exposure or infection in a student’s household require additional flexibility for all parties this year. Therefore:

  • Any deposit or payments for SummerBLAST 2021 are fully-refundable up to 1 month prior to the program start.
  • Any cancellation or withdrawal after 1 month prior to the program start is also fully-refundable, minus a $100 administrative fee.
  • We require a minimum of one week's notice for cancellation whenever possible. Due to reduced enrollment capacity during 2021, we anticipate a waiting list for summer sessions.

If a student or staff member is exposed to COVID-19 during their session, they are required to withdraw from the rest of the program, or until providing proof of a negative COVID-19 test.

  • Program cost will be prorated to reflect only the days the student participated.

If a student or staff member tests positive for COVID-19, the entire session will convert to virtual instruction on the next day.

  • We understand a virtual program may not be ideal or possible for all families, and program cost will be prorated for any student who withdraws at that time.

If People's Light is required to cancel a session in its entirety due to evolving health and safety considerations, all participants will be given a full refund.
