SummerBLAST 2019

Investigate. Express. Inspire.

Artists are observers, truth tellers, and creators. At People’s Light we introduce students to professional theatre makers who share essential tools drawn from their own creative work. We nurture curiosity about ourselves, each other, and the countless lives and stories that surround us all.

SummerBLAST is for the theatre student who knows an artist's journey is more than a final performance, and our teaching emphasizes process and skill building as much as the work we share at the end of each session. Exercises and ensemble challenges encourage our students to open their most curious and empathetic minds, to build confidence in their own voices, to interpret stories thoughtfully, and to experiment with bold expression using the body, voice, text, and imagination. We design each SummerBLAST experience to set the stage for our students’ many future adventures ahead.

Director of Education Kathryn Moroney says:

It feels pretty thrilling to build an oasis of creativity and laughter and fun for students – children and teens are craving these joyful, low-pressure spaces to try new things and thrive.
Not only are our students going to test a whole range of personal and collaborative skills, they will be using them daily as creators in exercises and rehearsals. What starts as unfamiliar becomes comfortable; students can feel that change and it really empowers them to try more and more and more!

Warming Up (Ages 10-15)

In this one-week mini session we explore the raw materials every performer needs: a strong and nimble voice and body, keen focus, and the bravery to stretch outside usual comfort zones. Performers are their own instruments — get to know yours better!

1 week: July 1, 2, 3, & 5 (no session on July 4)
Cost: $220

Littles (Ages 7-9)

How do we share the joy of our own imaginations with others? Music, movement, and improvisation will give young performers the chance to create characters and bring stories to life.

2 Weeks: July 22–August 2
Session sharing on Friday, August 2 at 5pm
Cost: $575

Youth (Ages 10-13)

Theatre making is the greatest game of what-if: what if I could? What if you were? What if that were possible? Spend two weeks where everything is possible, where every choice tells a story, and where we uncover the stories we want to share together.

2 Weeks: July 29–August 9
Session sharing on Friday, August 9 at 5pm
Cost: $575

Teen (Ages 14-18*)

Who are we, and who can we be? Acting asks us to observe ourselves and others without judgment, to use our own experiences, and to explore new points of view. Get ready to dig deep into a story, a character, and yourself.

3 Weeks: July 8–July 26
Session sharing on Friday, July 26 at 5pm
Cost: $850

*Students age 13 may enroll with permission of the Director of Education.
