No, People’s Light is not doing a stage adaptation of Back to the Future. (Although...how cool would that be?! Anyone have a direct line to Michael J. Fox?)
What is happening is still pretty awesome: this fall, People’s Light will become the first theatre in the United States to use Smart Caption Glasses technology for live captioning.
In partnership with the Institute on Disabilities at Temple University and the National Theatre of Great Britain, we are embarking on this project to revolutionize arts accessibility for Deaf, hard of hearing, and non-English speaking communities. By integrating Augmented Reality/Smart Glasses technology with a new voice-following algorithm developed by the National Theatre, we will provide audiences with real-time captioning for live performances.
Our staff were able to peek into the future at a special presentation on the technology by the National Theatre earlier this summer, and a small group will pilot the project this fall during select performances of Dot. The aim is to offer the Smart Caption Glasses to our wider audience in 2020.
Stay tuned for updates on this exciting project!
