The Costume Shop Manager plays a vital role in the operations of the theater. The ideal candidate thrives with timelines; each event is tightly timed and learning and reacting quickly and efficiently is important to the team and the performance as a whole. The Costume Shop Manager often serves as liaison between the Theatre and guest artists. They assure the best in hospitality for artists. The Costume Shop Manager oversees all aspects of costume construction, maintenance, and storage. Other responsibilities include working with the Director of Production to create and maintain expense budgets and reports, supervise designers, hire and supervise costume shop personnel, including wig and make up contractors or other specialists as needed, and collaborate interdepartmentally on various intuitional events. Administrative experience in shop management required along with knowledge of costume design, budgeting, costume history, fabrics, millinery, leatherwork, wig construction and theatrical makeup. Cutter/Draper skills are essential. Weekend and evening hours are expected as required by technical rehearsal.

Responsibilities include:

  • Report directly to the Director of Production.
  • Supervise full time and part time & over hire costume shop employees.
  • Supervise purchases and rentals as required by each show’s design.
  • Coordinate haircuts, makeup, styling as required.
  • Maintain production budgets for the department and reconcile purchases monthly.
  • Attend rehearsals as required and serve as liaison with Stage Management.
  • Work with Wardrobe Manager to ensure success of backstage operations.
  • Coordinate with designers to make a full costume plot.
  • Determine cleaning regime including a dry-cleaning schedule for each show.
  • Help maintain and arrange for servicing of shop machinery.
  • Assist in build of each production.
  • Maintain physical costume inventory and regular updating of digital catalogue.
  • Facilitate rentals with the outside theater community.
  • Establish a learning environment for full time, guest, and student alike.

  • Professional theatre experience
  • Physical demands include, but are not limited to, lifting, bending, climbing ladders and stairs
  • Passion for live theatre and for working with artists
  • Sewing skills
  • Valid Driver’s License

Preferred Experience:

  • Wig maintenance
  • Make up experience
  • Textile dyeing 
  • Bilingual (Spanish)
