School and Community Workshops Page

When People’s Light comes to a school, artists, students, and classroom teachers join together in active learning and theater-making. People’s Light is invited into schools for many reasons: some want a residency to help bring curriculum to life; others are eager for their children to have opportunities to explore their imaginations and create original performances. In all of the residencies, classroom teachers find that they learn new methods for reaching and assessing students with different learning styles. The experiential learning a residency offers can become a powerful catalyst for inspiring student confidence and building a stronger school identity.

Any school is welcome to call People’s Light to explore the possibility of doing a residency together. A typical year has us in residence in urban, suburban and rural schools and communities, working with people with a variety of abilities and learning styles in grades 3-12.

Schools with few arts opportunities are especially encouraged to contact us. We will be happy to steer you toward grant opportunities to support residencies. But please note that often a residency needs to be planned a year ahead in order to receive grant support.

Residencies scheduled for 2007-08

Delaware Valley Friends School, Paoli (Chester County)

People’s Light and Delaware Valley Friends School (DVFS) in Paoli are partnering in a three-year project at this independent school for students with reading difficulties. Our focus will be two-fold: enabling teachers to learn arts-based and kinesthetic methods to help meet the special needs of their students; and developing a theatre curriculum that involves students in workshops, performances and seeing productions at People’s Light.

Collingdale Community School, Collingdale (Delaware County)

Two-week residency on international folktales at this alternative school for elementary and middle school students.
